We hiked the three mile trail to the ridge overlooking Awa-awapuhi Valley, snaking our way through lime-green ferns, lush native forest, and tall grasses that smelled like sweet maple syrup. The end of the trail brought us to the very top of the ridge with sweeping views of the valley below and the folding spires of the cliffs stretching out into the sea. The vastness and spaciousness of this valley took my breath away. I felt like I was on the top of the world, peering down to a rich green island valley that had been here forever, eroding under rain and winds for eons. It was mesmerizing, awe-inspiring, and left me with a deep sense of gratitude to be alive.
