"Portofino Boat Reflections"
Original Oil on Canvas
30 x 40”
The beautiful seaside town of Portofino is home to mega-yachts, multi-million dollar villas, and 6 euro espressos. I stayed just over the hill, in the town of Santa Margherita Ligure for an inspiring week of adventure and art. I visited Portofino multiple times, sometimes biking along the coast, sometimes riding the bus, and one time, I hiked there with my easel and canvas strapped on my back, via the ancient trail used for hundreds of years along the ridge line.
There are many things I loved about Portofino...the varied colored stucco buildings, the surrounding hillsides dotted with cypress trees and luxurious villas, the castle and church sitting high atop the promontory overlooking the town, and the gorgeous light. But most of all, it was the reflections of the many colorful boats and buildings in the still waters of the harbor. They appeared as though somebody slowly spilled brightly colored paint into the water. The patterns and colors gently morphed into one another creating shapes upon shapes, in an endless dance of movement and hue. It was truly mesmerizing.
