This painting is inspired by the hip and charming neighborhood of Little Italy in San Diego. While the tuna industry in San Diego was at its peak. Little Italy was the heart and home fo the Italian and Portuguese fishermen. Today, you can still find Italian being spoken on the streets and in the restaurants, and a sense of community pride and culture which the Italians are known for. For many years, we had an art gallery on India Street (the street in the painting) which focused primarily on my paintings. The gallery was above a pizza place with a narrow staircase leading up to it. When you ascended the tall staircase and got to the top and into the gallery, it was like being transported into a world of technicolor travels. Being surrounded by the colorful art felt uplifting and was a perfect escape from the busy city street below. A 12 foot mural that I painted of a fishing boat in Positano, Italy still hangs on the side of the building where the gallery was located.
