“A New Day” was a breakthrough piece for me, and was the beginning of a new style of Abstract Landscapes I would explore further. Stylistically it is a little different compared to my more wavy distorted undulating style I normally paint. My intention was to loosen up and express the scene with deliberate, immediate brushstrokes, leaving some elements of the scene up to the viewer's imagination. This painting is painted in acrylic, which is also a departure for me, as all of my paintings until then had been painted in oil. As I began this painting, I didn’t plan out the direction I was headed in and by using acrylic (which dries faster than oil), I gained a freedom and space to make "mistakes," and an opportunity to paint layer upon layer upon layer until I achieved my desired effect.
Even though there is a sunset depicted in this painting, I titled it “A New Day,” to be symbolic of the breakthroughs we have in life, and the world of possibility that is always available in every moment. Whether it’s a New Year, a new month, week, day, etc., the time is NOW. Create it, feel it happening, then take action.
