Our hotel was perched on the highest point of the island of Santorini with the most spectacular view of the caldera and Aegean Sea. The light was hard white and crisp. I have heard many times about the beauty of Santorini and I have seen many pictures of the incredible views, but it was nothing like witnessing this place in person.
I was really longing to paint, so the next day I set up my easel in a small alleyway not far from the hotel. The staircase I was painting in was less than three feet wide and it looked out across a blue-domed church and beyond to the red rocks of the caldera. I set up right there. Apparently, it was delivery day for the small boutique hotel down the staircase from me because I was interrupted constantly. Every ten minutes I had to pick up my easel and paints and move out of the way, allowing the delivery man to pass me, on his runs back and forth. It was by far the most cramped quarters I have ever painted in, but very much worth the view and the experience of painting on site in Santorini.
