I was invited in 2021 to create the artwork for the 28th Luau & Legends of Surfing Invitational, which benefits Moores Cancer Center at UC San Diego Health. I am honored to stand among the amazing artists that have contributed to this incredible event over the years, and to lend my brush to help support further research into cancer.
Over the last three decades, the Luau & Legends Surfing Invitational has brought in nearly $10 million for research and helped thousands of patients through clinical trials, new treatments and delivering discoveries.
This painting celebrates life. The ebb and flow of the tides, the waves rushing in, then receding back. Like the waves, life can be peaceful, calm, inviting and nourishing, and at other times, they can be ferocious, powerful, overwhelming. Who are we in both of these times? The center of who we are is always here, always present. When times are tough we need the support of others, our families, our friends, our communities.
It represents the ethereal nature of life, the comings and goings, and within it all, there is this solid concrete structure, a supporting structure, taking on all that nature/life throws at it. The sun sets low in the sky, shining upon us through our journey. Vibrant colors radiate giving us hope and joy.
