On the scenic drive just north of Taos, known as the Enchanted Circle, we climbed the steep winding road through the mountains and then descended down into the high valley. The raw landscape is sprinkled with ranches and farmhouses, some dating back to the 1800s. We happened upon this lone farmhouse in the valley on a particularly stormy day. I was drawn to the fact that this one farmhouse was in the middle of nowhere and it reminded me of the early settlers and pioneers being out here all by themselves in the immense vastness.
The cloud-filled sky cast dark shadows over the little farmhouse, making it seem alone and vulnerable under the mighty storm. I painted the sky in glowing crimson reds to signify the intensity of the storm and the emotions it evoked in me.
