There are many wonderful times of day to hike through the Torrey Pines Reserve, but my favorite is sunset. About an hour before the sun dips below the horizon, I park at the north lot, take a brief stroll along the beach, then begin the invigorating climb up the hill via the reserve’s main road. The ascent gets my heart pumping, my blood flowing, and as I climb higher, the iconic Torrey pines become more abundant, framing the path with their windswept silhouettes.
At the top, a network of trails unfolds, each offering breathtaking views of the Pacific. The sunlight shimmers across the water, casting golden reflections, and even on overcast days, there’s often a break in the clouds where beams of light stream through, illuminating the ocean in a dramatic display.
This painting is inspired by the EB Scripps Overlook, a short and easy trail that rewards visitors with sweeping panoramas. It’s a perfect spot to take in the vastness of the landscape, orient yourself to the reserve’s other trails, and simply breathe in the beauty of nature. With benches thoughtfully placed for resting and reflection, it’s an ideal place to pause, soak in the moment, and be present.
