This new original oil painting is inspired by a day hiking and exploring Cinque Terra. I hiked the trail from Monterosso to Vernazza, stopping in Vernazza for the town’s infamous pasta with pesto and a nice cold birra. I sketched the church and buildings and got into an interesting conversation with a father and son from Poland, who were sitting at the table next to me. After lunch and some more exploring of Vernazza, I caught my train back to Monterosso to meet my pre-arranged boat that was waiting to take me to see the picturesque town of Riomaggiore by water. I have seen the five towns of Cinque Terra by land, but never by sea, so what better way than by boat. On the way to Riomaggiore we stopped off at a turquoise-colored cove, and went for a quick swim. We continued on our way, passing candy-colored buildings built nestled within the cliffs above. A man in a boat passed us, the sunset illuminating his boat and skin. I imagine him in his routine, out for the day, maybe dropping off supplies to towns along the coast, visiting a relative, or ferrying a tourist here and there. At the end of the day, he goes home, eats a family dinner with fresh local vegetables, cheeses, meats, a glass of vino. Laughter is in the air, maybe some music. Its fantastical, idyllic, maybe not reality, but hey, this is how dreams are made and put into action. We create our own reality.
