At midday, the light in Cardiff can become crisp and bright , as if all the colors and outlines of the landscape are heightened, a total stimulation of the senses. This intimate painting of Cardiff bluff was the second one I created in this series. I hadn’t painted the bluffs in my newer style yet, and it was a exciting exploration for me to discover how to treat geological elements like bluffs in my newer, evolving style. I love the richness of the deep crimsons and siennas in the shadows, which are contrasted by the loose, immediate strokes of ochre in the highlights. I wanted to capture the perspective and feel of the water rushing back into the sea, and still make it appear abstracted. It’s a sweet little painting which really captures the allure of Cardiff beach.
