Cadaques is a small fishing village set among the rocky headlands of the Costa Brava in Spain. The history of Cadaques is rich with many stories dating back to the 11th century. Many famous artists have visited Cadaques to experience its charm and inspiration. I did not know this at the time I arrived, but I came to find out that Cadaques was most famous for Salvador Dali. Dali set up his residence here and entertained many famous guests including, Marcel Duchamp, Rene Magritte, and Man Ray. Picasso also painted here, creating works such as “El Guitarrist” as well as other works from his Cubist period. This of course was a delight to find out and I reveled in the fact that I was painting in the same town, and painting some of the same subjects as they did. With this painting, I wanted to capture the magic of Cadaques at sunset, the warmth of the sun, the people playing on the beach, and the serenity of an afternoon in Spain.
