Experiencing a glacier by setting foot on top of it is a unique experience. It feels solid under my feet, and at the same time it is constantly melting, the activity of water continuously moving through it. Being up close and personal with the glacier, the blue of the ice was incredibly vivid, the result of air bubbles being squeezed out and ice crystals enlarging. As the water melted and flowed into ever-changing waterfalls, I knelt filled up my water bottle in a small stream with the purest water one can get…ahhh, delicious.
Originally intended to hang in a room designed for creativity, presence, and spiritual practice, I wanted the painting to embody those qualities. I was also drawn to incorporating a serpentine Kundalini-like flow of energy. The brushstrokes of the glacier wind there way down the valley snaking around the rigidity of the mountains. I was drawn to the symbolism of the glacier, with its extraordinary weight and solidity, which eventually transforms from a solid to a liquid. I see it as becoming more fluid, as dissolving our “self” into the source of pure being. All the elements are represented, sun, earth, sky, water. More than anything, as I stand in front of it, i feel it to be a very open painting, light, fluid, energetic, and balanced. I think a good painting for inside a creative space dedicated to building vitality and increasing awareness.
