Since the day I arrived on the tiny island of Folegandros, I felt called to paint one of the 72 white-washed churches dotting the landscape. I wanted to paint it plein air, on site, so I could really experience the sounds, the wind, the essence of my subject. I grabbed my paints, canvas, and easel, hopped on my trusty 4-wheeler and drove to the church I had chosen on the other side of the island. When the road ended, I hiked another mile down an old mule trail, and finally reached the church on top of the hill overlooking the blue, blue Aegean Sea. Not another soul around, I was free to paint.
The light was crisp and sunny and the wind was absolutely howling, so much so that my canvas shook in the wind, and my brush skipped and bounced every time it touched the canvas. Realizing that I was trying to control the situation too much, I was forced to loosen up. I let go. I painted bold deliberate strokes. By the end of the day, the sun cast reds and oranges onto the landscape. As if to mirror how I was feeling, the little white church seemed to lean towards the sun, honoring it, celebrating it, yearning to become one with it.
